Spirit, determination and athleticism on show at the first COBIS Primary Games to be held in the UK

St Saviour's School, Ikoyi took home the COBIS Champions Cup for an incredible 4th year running with strong performances from debutants Dubai English Speaking School (DESS) (joint second), Children's International School (CIS) (joint second) and Jumeriah English Speaking School (JESS) (third) at the first COBIS Primary Games to be held in the UK.

The Games brought 17 teams from 12 countries to Stantonbury Campus near Milton Keynes for three days of exhilarating action which saw students compete in swimming, athletics and football events. Although the event officially began on Tuesday 10 April, some said the first competition on Monday was to guess which teams were the most jetlagged as teams touched down at Heathrow from as far away as China. This did not affect their performance and on Day 1, students excelled in the swimming pool with some impressive times in the pool by the boys and girls from JESS and DESS who ultimately took home 1st and 2nd place in the overall swimming competition.

It was out of the pool and onto the track and field on Day 2 as the teams took part in sprints, middle-distance running, relay, javelin vortex, long jump and high jump. Both St Saviour's and The British School in The Netherlands showed grit to move up the leaderboard on the day while there were some standout runs from International British School of Bucharest (IBSB) and DESS.

The football pitch at Stantonbury was the venue for the third and final day of the Games and silky skills from the likes of King's College La Moraleja, St Catherine's School Athens, The British School of Paris, International School of Moscow and CIS threatened to put a stop to the dominance of St Saviour's Ikoyi but the Nigerian school showed nerves of steel to come through a number of penalty shootouts in the Boys event to ensure they took the overall title home to Lagos again.

COBIS and our delivery partners, the Griffin Schools Trust, would like to thank the students and staff of all of the participant schools for another enjoyable and exciting COBIS Primary Games. We would also like to thank our VIP athletes who attended and presented medals throughout the games; Joanne Jackson, Joe Roebuck, Nathan Fox and Alistair Patrick-Heselton. Finally, sincere thanks to the officials from Berks & South Bucks County ASA, Milton Keynes Athletics Clubs and MK Dons for their hard work in judging the competition and to our hosts, Stantonbury Arts and Leisure Centre and the Stantonbury Campus.

COBIS would also like to thank all who support the COBIS Games and the competing teams, especially, O'Neills Irish International Sportswear, our Headline Sponsor and all our other sponsors:

We are delighted to announce Gulf Youth Sport as our Media Partner for the 2017 COBIS Games. The GYS team uploaded videos, photos and features to the their website throughout the Games. Check out the GYS website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts to see all the fun from the Games.

The scheme, which focuses on school improvement and development rather than a snapshot inspection, is offered to international British schools overseas as an alternative to the Department for Education's BSO accreditation. Dubai College, St George's International School Luxembourg, The British International School of Kuala Lumpur and Doha College have become the first schools to be accredited under the new Patron's Accreditation and Compliance scheme offered by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) as an alternative to the British School Overseas (BSO) accreditation. The scheme, which bears the name of the association's Patron, HRH The Duke of York, KG, has completed its pilot stage with successful school visits taking place in Dubai, Luxembourg and Malaysia while Doha College in Qatar were the first school to fully participate in the scheme after the pilot stage. All four schools were deemed to have met the high standards set by COBIS for the scheme and were awarded certificates, signed by HRH The Duke of York, KG, at the 36th COBIS Annual Conference in London.

Students will work in teams on 3-7 students.

Students will also develop key skills including debating, critical and creative thinking, and the art of compromise, which are increasingly necessary in the world today.

The theme for the 2018 COBIS MUN Conference is Innovations, and each student committee will be expected to seek resolutions that aim to revolutionise UN processes and approaches to the keys issues being debated.

Location: InterContinental Bucharest (hosted by International British School Bucharest)

The COBIS MUN is limited to 20 schools and registrations must be received by 6 October 2017, so don't delay, or you could miss out on one of the highlights of the 2017-2018 COBIS Calendar!
